What we did in 2003-2004
[Establishment of operational company “G-Project Co., Ltd”]
In March 2003, G-Project Co., Ltd was established as an Operation Company supported by a parent company Akimura Corporation that is a local constructing company in Shiga prefecture. The G-Project Co., Ltd is dedicated to produce the Kobunaki Eco-village and within it, the Earth Community Institute (ECI) for sustainable living.

From April to December, through a series of the workshops, many ideas for sustainable lifestyle in Kobunaki were suggested by the members of the NGO “Ecomura-Networking” in the themes of Water, Energy, Symbiotic housing and landscaping, image of the lifestyle in Kobunaki. We applied the projects in Kobunaki as a matrix.(project matrix) It consists of the items (horizontal), water, energy, material flow, societal health, and the fields of action (vertical); community, business, research and development. And we are continually improving the development plan, now it is ver.10.1 (master plan ver.10.1)

[Getting recognition as a national leading project]
In June 2003, the Kobunaki partnership scheme between NPO, NGO, government, and private company received recognition as one of the model projects of symbiotic development project in Japan.
[The 1st ECI program with Mr. Gunter Pauli in May, 2003]
The 1st ECI program named “Ecological Design in Kobunaki with Mr. Gunter Pauli and ZERI” was held on site at Kobunaki. About 100 people joined it, and we learned about the concept of “the 5 Kingdoms of nature” and applied it to the lifestyle ideas for the Ecovillage.
[Prof. Fritjof Capra suggested the name “Earth Community Institute =ECI” ]
We’re planning the institute for sustainable society design at the center of Kobunaki, we named it WSI=World Sustainability Institute at first. In July 2003, we called on people who are leading experts in the field of sustainability for assistance with our project. Then, we met Prof. Capra and got new name, “Earth Community Institute” =ECI. This name expresses our will to communicate and collaborate with all communities in the world. Thank you to Mr. Capra!

Prof. Niren and Mr. Akimura went to China to present the Kobunaki Ecovillage at International Eco-material symposium. China will need many Ecovillages…
Our actions and hopes for 2004-2005
*We’d like to organize the project teams to realize the 23 projects as soon as possible.
*The time has come! The process for creation of land will begin in the spring of 2005. We’ll have the Japanese traditional ceremony “ground-blessing ceremony.”
*We are discussing the guidelines and “future-oriented specifications” of the buildings in Kobunaki.
*In the fall of 2004 we are hoping to start a series of seminars of ECI program with ECI fellows.

The 1st program of the ECI is held with Mr. Gunter Pauli in May 2003. And the 2nd program with the Mr. Michele de Lucchi was held in May, 2004.
We’d like to have the chance to get in touch your personality and rich spirit in Kobunaki, Omi-Hachiman city as early as possible.
